GREAT PERSONALITIES WHO FAILED INITIALLY AND STOOD UP STRONG

Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 to Jainulabdeen, a boat owner at Rameswaram, located in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He came from a poor background and started working at an early age to supplement his family s income. After completing school, Kalam distributed newspapers in order to financially contribute to his father s income. In his school years, he had average grades, but was described as a bright and hardworking student who had a strong desire to learn and spend hours on his studies, especially mathematics. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India s highest civilian honour.

Infosys was co-founded in 1981 by N. R. Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani, N. S. Raghavan, S. Gopalakrishnan, S. D. Shibulal, K.Dinesh and Ashok Arora. After this, Murthy started a company named Softronics in 1976. When that company failed, he joined Patni Computer Systems in Pune. After settling down in Pune, Murthy founded Infosys in 1981 with an initial capital injection of Rs 10,000, which was invested by his wife Sudha Murthy. His wife, Sudha Murthy, is an Indian social worker and accomplished author. Infosys was voted India s most admired company in The Wall Street Journal Asia 200 every year since 2000.


Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born on 24th April 1973 in Bombay. During his school days he attended the MRF Pace Foundation to train as a fast bowler, but Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee, was unimpressed, suggesting that Tendulkar focus on his batting instead. Tendulkar scored his much awaited 100th international hundred on 16 March 2012, at Mirpur against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup. In April 2012, Tendulkar accepted the Rajya Sabha nomination proposed by the president. He is the first active sportsperson and cricketer to have been nominated to the Rajya Sabha. He got Bharata Ratna.

Saina Nehwal was born on 17th March 1990 in a Jat family to Dr. Harvir Singh Nehwal and Usha Nehwal in the city of Hisar, Haryana. Her family later shifted to Hyderabad and so Saina spent her growing years in Hyderabad, India. Nehwal has a brown belt in Karate. However, she quit Karate at the age of 8, when she was asked to have a motorcycle run over her stomach. Saina is the first Indian women to win a medal in Badminton at the Olympics on 4 August 2012.

Amitabh Bachchan was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, in north central India. When he was looking for job at All India Radio got rejected stating his voice was not good. He also had a small stint in politics in the 1980s. His political career, however, was short lived: He failed miserably while running ABCL and lost his hard earned money. With the inception of “Kaun Banega Karodpati”, he earned all his lost money, name and fame. Despite all the odds and obstacles he became the nation ICON and still ruling the industry in all aspects. His mere presence makes more dazzling in any occasion that is his stature.
